The McFarland Cup Final
Our Lady's and St Patrick’s College Knock 3-8
St Patrick’s High School Keady 3-7
The Year 10 hurlers suffered a heart breaking one point defeat in the final of the Mc Farland Cup (Ulster Colleges year 10 B Hurling) played at Aghagallon Co.Antrim on Friday afternoon. Having won the Casement cup (yr 14) , Kirk Cup (yr 12) cups earlier in the year we were going for a treble in colleges hurling but alas we had to accept a one point defeat.
The Keady boys started brightly with a good point from Middletown’s Brendan McArdle shortly followed by a goal from burly full forward Dylan Mc Kenna (Keady) Midfielder Eoin Finnegan (Derrynoose) scored a fine and long range point. Followed by 3 great points from inspirational captain Sean Leonard (Derrynoose) playing at centre half forward. Knock responded with a few frees before Brendan Mc Ardle scored a great goal. Keady were very dominant at this stage as Dylan Mc Kenna scored another great goal following a great catch in the big square. Knock rallied with a goal from a 13m free and a late goal to leave the halftime score at SPK 3-4 to Knock 2-5.
Knock had the wind in the second half and scored three points over the half but the deceive score was a goal from the impressive Lorceen Mc Caughey in the 42nd minute. Keady scored three points from Brendan Mc Ardle, Sean Leonard and Eoin Finnegan and some good goal keeping by Knock kept out that elusive goal needed for victory. A few hearts breaking close wide’s left Knock winning by the minimum margin at the final whistle on a 3-8 to 3-7 score line.
Goal keeper Mark Mc Guigan (Middletown) could not be blamed for any of the goals as he played his heart out as did all of the defenders. Caoimhin Rafferty (Keady) covered acres of ground as did his midfield partner Eoin Finnegan. Hopefully this group of skilful lads will go on to win College titles in the near future.
